Rabbi Tarfon taught: “It is not your responsibility to finish the work [of perfecting the world], but you are not free to desist from it either” — Pirkei Avot (Ethics of the Fathers), 2:16.
All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a Thousand Enemies. Whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first, they must catch you…digger, listener, runner. Prince with the swift warren.
Be cunning…and your people will never be destroyed.
–Richard Adams, 1920-Dec 2016
( a series of posts I’ve concatenated here from Dec 27, 2016) Here is the thing about Carrier Fisher for me. Like most folks of my approximate age I was introduced to her via A New Hope and her experience really matched mine in the broad sense of being (or trying to be) a kick-ass girl in a whole room full of boys. Each of those Star Wars movies really only had her (as a woman) in a true speaking part. She completely fell off my radar except for the occasional news story about her addiction.
“I would have come for you. And if I couldn’t walk, I’d crawl to you, and no matter how broken we were, we’d fight our way out together-knives drawn, pistols blazing. Because that’s what we do. We never stop fighting.”
― Leigh Bardugo, Crooked Kingdom
Unpopular opinion number I forget: Are we done feeling sorry for the white people yet? Because I’m really over that. I could go, oh the rest of my natural lifespan without another story about how the ‘average midwesterner’ didn’t identify with Mrs. Rodam-Clinton and looked to Mr. Trump and is now going to get screwed by him. About how the Fortune 500 CEOs are nervous about Trump (the ones that aren’t getting jobs from him anyway). About the Republican party having a tiger by the tail. Are we done talking about white people yet? Because there are a whole lot […]
Know where you stand. I want you to take a pen and paper and write down your values. What are the things that are absolutely not acceptable to you in your life, in your town, in your state (province), in your country, in your world. Some of it will come easily, some will take longer, some you probably can’t articulate yet. Then I want you to put that piece of paper up somewhere you are going to see it on a regular basis. It’s now your barometer for the world. This is how you fight normalization and news fatigue and […]
Go into the arts. I’m not kidding. The arts are not a way to make a living. They are a very human way of making life more bearable. Practicing an art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow, for heaven’s sake. Sing in the shower. Dance to the radio. Tell stories. Write a poem to a friend, even a lousy poem. Do it as well as you possibly can. You will get an enormous reward. You will have created something.
— Kurt Vonnegut
Hey there, is your passport up to date yet? Normally it takes 6-8 weeks to process it. State Dept has got a move on right now (bless them) and they’re processing in about 2.5 weeks. Please, if you have been meaning to, do it now. There are resources out there, especially if you are at risk.
Urging Support for the No Religious Registry Act Today I’m calling my House Representative and asking her to support HR 6382, the No Religious Registry Act, which is currently stalled in the House Judiciary Committee. The likelihood that the Republican leadership will allow it to proceed is admittedly slim at best in this new world we live in, but it’s important to let our representatives know there’s vocal opposition to what Trump is planning. As I learned from Talia Lavin’s newsletter last week, This bill aims to “preemptively foreclose the possibility of a Muslim registry; it ‘would prohibit the Attorney […]
