Some pet peeves, a meme, and ‘pagan standard time’

In my experience with pagan communities, we are seen (and often see ourselves) as irresponsible, unable to be on time [pagan standard time, anyone?], with this sort of ‘hippy dippy’ culture. This isn’t something to be proud of, in my opinion. We have the power to affect great and real change, but we can’t even get to a workshop on time nor have we managed to create established churches, seminaries, or land spaces except for the rare few. It’s so frustrating that ‘calendaring’ seems to be a foreign concept, and I so appreciate events like Pantheacon that specifically say “we […]

Invocation to Antiqua – Ancient One

Lady cloaked in midnight, hear my keen tonight. Help me to midwife this transition, to ease the passing of that which was. Bring ease to our hearts, let us dance to tame the howling winds of grief. As I stand at the crossroads, light the path with dream-songs that we may access deep wells of intuition. Weaver, your threads of fate create the future & tie us together. Never alone, never forgotten .

Invocation to Sapientia – Woman of Wisdom

Lady of wisdom, hear my call. Grant us your discernment in the weaving this night. Multivalent goddess, I feel the chill in the air as evening falls, And we sip from your Cauldron of Wisdom, chasing Awen. Help us to understand your mysteries, bring us knowledge of the cycles and the sacred. We honor your energy, rooted in the deep earth, and embrace your mastery. Goddess, Hierophant, Sapientia – Lady, we welcome you.

WotY and GeoLocal Celebrations

Celebrating the turning of the year as a pagan in Madison, WI has been a completely different experience from the years I spent in San Diego, CA. In SoCal, it was impossible to relate to “winter” holidays, because it was 80* and sunny at Christmas. We didn’t really have “harvest” due to drought and lack of rainfall (San Diego sees an average of 266 sunny days per year, to give you context). Here in southwest Wisconsin, though, we get all manner of weather, definitely all 4 seasons, and being surrounded by farms makes it a bit easier to see […]

CareBear Stare

Every time I see “sending thoughts/energy/prayers/etc.” on social media, I cringe. It’s not that I don’t believe in the power of energy healing, because I do. “One 2013 study found that 10 minutes of energy healing was as effective as physical therapy in improving the range of motion in people with mobility problems.” (NYDailyNews) and “The most recent data analyzed (during 2008-9) shows strong evidence that Reiki is indeed responsible for a positive biological response in both humans and animals. The strongest evidence (rated “excellent” in the Process) was reported in the most carefully controlled of all experiments; none other […]

Sun of the Son – Thoughts on the Solstice

I love summer, even more so now that I live in a place where the seasons are clearly delineated and you have to maximize your warm weather enjoyment when you can. Summer Solstice is the longest day of the year, opposite Winter Solstice as the longest night of the year, and is the official beginning of summer (nope, it doesn’t start on Memorial Day (US) when the pools open :-P). On the Solstice, whether Winter or Summer, we honor the sun that gives us warmth and life; in summer the sun is at the height of its power, reigning in […]

Spiritual Biography

It used to crack me up when people claimed they’d been a Witch since childhood. Children grow up in the religion of their parents and it seemed fake & presumptuous to make a claim like that. After all, Wicca and Goddess Spirituality have only been a part of the modern, cultural fabric for roughly half a century – and there are only 2-3 generations that could have been born into them as of 2017. In considering writing my own spiritual biography, I assumed it would start in my teen years as I discovered Wicca/Paganism for myself. The deeper I thought […]

Invocation to Potens

I wrote this to honor the Woman of Power, called Potens, based on my work with Jailbreaking the Goddess (I highly recommend the book and you can find my review of it here.). If you’re looking to call in the power of potential & passion, I offer you my invocation.   I call to you, Potens You with the passion to change the world. Warrior Queen, strong and powerful Virgin Huntress, sovereign unto herself Wayfaring Wanderer, lusting for adventure Sacred Whore, empowering sexual expression Impassioned Activist, resolve at the ready Join me now, lend me your verve. Help me as […]

Woundedness vs. Victimhood

In my experience, it is a rare beast who makes it through life without Wounds. Paganism seems to have a fair amount of people being open about their Wounds, and actively doing the Work. However, we also have our share of Victims. The idea that woundedness differs from victimhood seems, on first glance, to be splitting hairs. Aren’t all victims wounded? Doesn’t that make them the same? While the first answer is “yes”, I believe the answer to the second is an unequivocal “no”. This essay is going to unpack some of our assumptions around these concepts and offer a […]

Invocation to Femella

This is an invocation I wrote to the Divine Girl, based on my work with Jailbreaking the Goddess (I highly recommend the book and you can find my review of it here. ). If you need a little Femella in your life, I hope this might speak to you <3   Sweet innocence, gently trusting Happy girl, come to me Show me joy and blanket forts, help me build daisy chains and dance with the wind Whirling dervish, frolicking in the flowers Silly girl, come to me Let us scamper together through rain soaked puddles and laugh until we cry […]
